OpenSSL Is Looking to Contract a Full-time Community Engagement Leader / Evangelist

Job Description

We are seeking a passionate, tech-savvy individual to act as a Community Engagement Leader for the OpenSSL project. The ideal candidate will be responsible for fostering and enhancing connections between various communities around OpenSSL, facilitating fruitful discussions, spreading awareness about the project, and driving engagement and contributions. An essential aspect of this role is alignment with our core values and mission, as we expect these principles to be reflected in your day-to-day professional activities. Beyond community engagement, this role also involves collecting and contributing valuable insights to the project’s roadmap, making it an integral part of the project’s continuous growth and improvement.

This is a remote position with travel required, approximately up to 15% of working time. Given the global nature of the project, we require flexibility in accommodating various time zones outside of conventional business hours. We are seeking candidates located specifically within the Europe and North America.

The OpenSSL Project develops and maintains the OpenSSL software - a robust, commercial-grade, full-featured toolkit for general-purpose cryptography and secure communication. As an open-source endeavour, OpenSSL benefits from a global community of contributors who help to improve and secure the software. These contributors range from enthusiastic hobbyists to full-time professionals, all dedicated to the shared goal of providing high-quality security and privacy tools. While OpenSSL is not a large organisation, its work forms a crucial part of the infrastructure that makes secure online communication possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement: Actively participate in various online platforms and communities such as Twitter, Mastodon, LinkedIn, StackOverflow, Slashdot, Soylentnews, Hacker News, Lobste.rs, GitHub, and more. Promote OpenSSL and its related projects, initiatives and provide updates to these communities.
  • Liaison: Maintain healthy relationships with key stakeholders including sponsors, committers, support customers, active developers community, and major OS distributions.
  • Community Support: Assist users, issue reporters, and those who submit PRs, by coordinating with the technical team and providing necessary support and information.
  • Conference Representation: Represent OpenSSL at industry conferences and events, delivering presentations and engaging with attendees to increase project visibility and cultivate relationships.
  • Outreach: Reach out to large companies, potential sponsors and other entities who might benefit from using OpenSSL.
  • Content Creation: Collaborate with blogger-users and other individuals or entities who have written about OpenSSL, fostering a continuous stream of high-quality, relevant content.
  • Advocacy: Liaise with regulatory bodies to understand the impact of the proposed policies and regulation changes, as well as provide input to those bodies on behalf of OpenSSL and more broadly Open Source in general.
  • Feedback Collection: Gather and consolidate feedback and insights from the community to assist in future product development and enhancement.
  • Strategy Development: Assist us to develop content, messaging and communication strategies.

Requirements

  • A strong background in technology and a solid understanding of OpenSSL and similar technologies.
  • Experience in community management, public relations, or a related field.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal in English.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise, and manage time effectively.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and work independently.
